Case Studies --> Research & Development

Adhesives for timber engineering require characteristics that enable them to be used for new component work, which is part-prepared in the factory and completed by on-site installation and refurbishment work, which is generally entirely within the confines of an existing structure.

Products fall into 4 basic categories:

  1. Free-flowing consolidation liquid
  2. Thixotropic gels
  3. Structural grouts
  4. Lightweight pliable mortars which, when cured, can be shaped with woodworking tools such as chisels and saw

Examples of each of these in the Rotafix® range are:

  1. Consolidating resin (code no. 3116)
  2. Timberset (code no.3554 and 3558)
  3. TG6 Structural Grout (code nos. 3480 and 3483)
  4. TM3 Moulding Mortar (code no.3420)
Rotafix are working closely with a number of English and European test houses and academic institutions, designing test procedures which will correctly evaluate the performance of timber adhesives. In particular, their ability to bond to both dry and wet hardwoods and softwoods and the mode of failure of joints consisting of timber and other adherents such as carbon, glass fibre and metal plates and rods.
Various test procedures are indicated in the photographs. Rotafix are the UK representatives on the CEN TC193 WG11 Committee whose remit is to provide standard test procedures for adhesives for on-site assembly or restoration of timber structures.

Typical mode of failure exhibited by tensile test where multi-strands of epoxy glass fibre are installed in a hole drilled into end grain timber bonded with Rotafix Structural Adhesive adhesive. With correct adhesive rod combination results in cohesive failure of the timber rather than de-bond failure.
