Practical solutions to building problems
BEFORE
The Rotafix® Crack Repair System offers a simple yet reliable method of permanently repairing cracks and joints and for repairs to spalled concrete areas. (For structural crack repairs see MASONRY STITCHING information sheet – ref. no. MS1297/2)
The repair consists of cutting out, priming and filling using a special Epoxy liquid and a Cement based repair material. The repair material, Rendacrete LW, only requires the addition of water to produce an easily worked, low shrinkage waterproof mortar for a large variety of commonplace repairs and fillets.
It is essential that a Structural Engineer has been instructed to check that the reasons for the cracking have been established and the causes eliminated. Under no circumstances should cracks be repaired if the cause is unknown, and there is any likelihood that failure of the repair could result in structural collapse.
ROTAFIX® RESEARCH
Rotafix® has developed its solvent-free technology over the last three decades and designed heavy-duty repair systems for concrete and stone structures subject to severe operational conditions. Now you can benefit from this technology by replacing sand and cement mortars and associated polymer bonding agents with a high performance epoxy-cement system.
THE PROBLEM Solid floors, cills, lintels, flaunchings, fillets and other masonry structures are frequently found to be cracked or fissured. It may be necessary to place and monitor Telltales in order to confirm that movement has ceased. This service can be provided by the Remedial Contractor. Many crack defect repairs are covered by Buildings Insurance. It is therefore important that the client is aware of this possibility at the investigation stage. All crack repairs require a bond to be made between old and new material: frequently, when repairs are made with sand and cement, or when using other water based systems, the variability in ‘suction’ through the repair material results in stress build up and consequent cracking at the edges of the repair. The bond with the old material is further degraded through the use of bonding liquids that depend on the water as a carrier: evaporation and absorption vary according to the weather and the porosity of the materials, again weakening the bond and leading to re-cracking.
THE SOLUTION Apply P12, a solvent and water free epoxy Primer and fill with Rendacrete LW, a cement based, shrink resistant grout. The Primer, (P12), is a two pack Epoxy resin designed to be applied to masonry surfaces, prior to repair using Rendacrete LW, to provide a uniform adhesion between old and new materials. It prevents variable suction and evaporation problems and instantly forms an adhesive film ready for filling. The grout, or filler, Rendacrete LW, is a pre-bagged cementitious product designed to be laid into P12 Primer whilst the primer is still tacky. It can be easily worked, moulded and carved into shape. The length and depth of all cracks should be measured. The aesthetic requirements of an individual application should be assessed and where necessary colorant may be added to the Rendacrete LW.
