CASE STUDIES:

Glulam Repairs

Priory Gardens

Architect Phil Bailey Norman, Dorban

Structural Engineer Bob Tucker, Tucker Associates, Telephone 01442 891411

The contractor Cedric Reynolds of Cedric’s Works, Telephone 01727 842568

The problem – The property is an ‘A’ frame house, the frame is constructed of glulaminated beams.
These beams are seated externally into galvanised steel shoes.
Moisture has trapped within these shoes, causing moisture to track up the end grain of the glulaminated beam see photo with the moisture meter.

The remedy- support the beam within the building.
The repair was carried out in two phases to reduce the temporary works.
Shear connectors were fitted into slots in the side of the beam.
ROTAFIX TG6 was poured via. a hopper system into the steel shoe, this system will ensure that any water that enters the shoe in the future will not effect the timber beam.

The beam was then clad with a simulated glulam beam, to improve the appearance.
