Rotafix® Timber-Resin Splice (TRS)
SUMMARY OF FEATURES
The Rotafix® Timber-Resin Splice (TRS) system offers the very best method for the repair of in-situ timber joists, wall plates, lintels and structural timbers.
The Rotafix® TRS is a new concept using our original resin technology to enable section of Treated, Strength Graded guaranteed timber (60 years) to be attached onto the original joist or beam. Slots are cut, either from above or from the side, to accommodate the factory fitted connector rods and then the resin is simply poured in or injected from a standard cartridge.
The assembly is supplied as a Kit, complete with the new piece of treated timber fitted with shear connector rods, an appropriate quantity of resin and in a range of standard joist sizes and cut-off lengths.
ROTAFIX® RESEARCH
Rotafix® has developed its Timber Engineering systems over the last three decades. The Company is a leader in the field of Timber Engineering, supporting and working with Universities, Technical Institutions and the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA). All Rotafix® timber resin systems are specified using professional Structural Engineers expertise. If you require a Certificate to verify the calculations for your particular installation this is available at additional cost.
THE PROBLEM
Timber decay, either at the end of a beam, or mid-span usually means that extensive opening-up is required to replace, plate or side-splice. Such repairs inevitably require the removal of any ceilings, the loss of some floor boarding and sometimes the formation of new wall sockets to accommodate side-splices. This destructive approach is largely unnecessary. However, it is essential that all the normal Remedial Inspection Techniques are used to ensure that the extent of the timber decay and the type of attack have been fully established. Consider the disadvantages of the ‘conventional’ repair and compare with the advantages of the Rotafix® method:
THE SOLUTION
Replacement of decayed timber with treated, structurally connected, resin bonded TRS units. No other method comes close to this level of specification: the repair has greater structural strength than the parent timber, yet provides the visual and practical advantages of the original in terms of shape, appearance, location, and ease of fixing (floor boards and ceilings). If a cosmetic repair is required, the joint and resin-filled areas can be topped off with Rotafix® Moulding Mortar so that graining, staining or painting can be applied to match the original.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Ceilings need not always be disturbed: even quite ordinary ceilings cost money to remove and replace: this also causes substantial disruption to the use of the building. Using a resin repair technique it is often possible to lift only a few floorboards and to then remove and replace the decayed joist ends without disturbing the ceiling. Other Rotafix® resins can be used to bond the ceiling to the repaired ends and to consolidate lath and plaster, where loss of adhesion has caused cracking.
Wall sockets can be re-used: if joists are supported inside the walls, particularly if the walls are made of large stones, it can be very expensive to create new sockets to accommodate side splices or metal plates. Using the Rotafix techniques the splice is always end on and of the same section, so the wall need not be damaged.
Standard sizes mean ease of costing: by choosing the nearest oversize length allowance can be made for undiscovered timber decay. The excess amount is simply cut off the Rotafix® end if not required , or if more convenient, the ‘parent’ is cut back further. This reduces the risk of under costing and the job need not be delayed.
